Tokyo -- Japan's top automakers reported deep production declines in March as the unprecedented collapse in global demand maintained its painful grip on one of the country's key industries.

Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, said its worldwide production slid 46 percent in March from a year earlier to 472,036 vehicles as overseas demand plunged by more than two-thirds.

Toyota's production in Japan was halved, while overseas output dived 40 percent.

Last week's financial results and this week's sales figures show that the U.S. auto industry still faces serious financial challenges.

As the Obama administration considers whether to provide additional loans to GM and Chrysler, the UAW asked Level Field Institute, a research firm based in Washington, to answer two questions:

• Do auto jobs matter to the U.S. economy anymore?

• If so, do some companies matter more than others?

Automakers support about 3 million U.S. jobs, but ...

Forget about predictions. We're in uncharted territory as 2009 begins. Anybody who tells you that a year ago he or she predicted that gasoline prices would top $4 a gallon then fall back to $1.50 in 2008, or that Ford would be perceived as the healthiest of Detroit's automakers as 2009 dawns is lying.
So the banking industry gets a blind $700 billion bailout in October and the economy goes deeper into the dump.

The auto industry, by contrast, begs for loans and guarantees reform unseen outside of bankruptcy. And once it gets access to borrowed cash, it almost immediately puts it to work for consumers.

GMAC LLC, the finance arm of General Motors Corp., stepped up to the plate strong on Tuesday when, after getting access to $6 billion from the U.S. Treasury, made credit available ...

So it's time to look forward to the coming year with some New Year's resolutions and a wish-list.

Dixie leads the way in lavish corporate subsidies. As other parts of the country follow suit, it's time to ask whether such incentives work.

In 2006 the Korean car maker Kia decided to build a $1.2 billion plant in West Point, Georgia. To land the project, the state offered a $420 million incentive package that included free land (bought from the previous owners at about 2.5 times the market value), tax-funded employee training, and a new $30 million Interstate interchange. Altogether, ...

The Japanese auto giant announced that it was going to bypass offers of hundreds of millions of dollars in "recruitment incentives" (corporate subsidies) from several Southern states, and would instead set up shop in Ontario, Canada, which was offering much fewer give-aways.

The decision to head north was an embarassment for Southern states eagerly ...
