Seems as though it is not just the US automakers having trouble. The following stories seem to show the rest also having a bit of trouble? So all of those who ask, 'why aren't the imports struggling then?' Guess what?

Hmm, more trouble in paradise? Is anyone starting to see it is not the auto companies, but the economy?

7 Japan's carmakers slashing production on Mon Dec 29, 2008 1:42 am

With demand for vehicles slumping in most of the world, Japan's export-oriented auto industry is slamming the brakes on output.
Japanese vehicle production shrank 20.4 percent in November, suggesting that Japan's automakers may have to retrench as much as their struggling U.S. rivals, J.P. Morgan analyst Kohei Takahashi said in a recent research report.
The production cutbacks reflect 18 percent contractions in domestic and overseas demand last month.

9 Nissan recalling more than 240,000 trucks on Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:08 pm

WASHINGTON — Nissan Motor Co. is recalling more than 240,000 trucks in 20 cold weather states to fix a problem that could prevent front air bags from deploying in a crash.

The government said in a posting on its Web site Wednesday that the recall affects the Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra for the 2005-2009 model years.

In states where wintertime road salt is used, a mix of snow and salt could enter a crash zone sensor area and rust, interrupting the signal and potentially preventing the front air bags from deploying in a crash.

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday it is slashing domestic production by 64,000 vehicles in February and March to trim inventories and adjust to a drastic slide in global demand.

The bad news comes on the heels of media reports Thursday that said Japan's No. 3 automaker is likely to post an operating loss in the fiscal year through March, joining a growing list of big Japanese corporate names expected to slide into the red.

Since September, Nissan has already announced, over several times, domestic production cuts that combine to a reduction of 225,000 vehicles, spokeswoman Haruko Wada said. The company had initially expected to produce 1.38 million vehicles in Japan for the fiscal year.

13 Honda reducing Japan jobs as it trims production on Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:42 am

TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. announced Friday another round of job cuts in Japan as it trims production by thousands of vehicles to cope with a global drop in auto demand.

Japan's No. 2 automaker said the decision to cut 3,100 jobs will slash to zero the number of temporary workers at its plants by the end of April. It had already reduced its temporary work force by 1,200.

Major Japanese automakers are under pressure not to layoff full-fledged workers because this nation's corporate culture encourages lifetime employment. Instead, they have relied on cuts to their large temporary work forces to adjust to lower demand.

Don't you think it's strange that we don't hear any news about the imports problems on CNN, NBC, CBS, FOX, or any other of the major news sources. I suppose those who live in Michigan may have a chance to hear about it more than the rest of us, (I'm assuming that their media outlets are not as biased against anything built in America as the rest of them are.) Too bad the USA Today refuses to cover the same topics as Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press !!!

I think the rest of the country just doesnt realize what a problem this can be for all of us. Detroit is smack in the middle of it, at least theoretically so. It amazes me as I read the stories on the Freep that the comments made seem to concentrate on Detroit, when the problem is nation wide. Or really worldwide!
